Wood-fired celadon serving bowl I – Malcolm Turner

Malcolm Turner is a potter based in the Welsh Borders. He has been building kilns and making ceramics for over 40 years and works primarily from his woodland studio, using a self-built kiln and a wood-firing process fuelled by timber sourced from the surrounding landscape. He works on the wheel and hand-builds his more conceptual pieces.

This serving bowl is wheel-thrown and finished with a celadon glaze developed specifically for wood firing. The form is open and measured, with a rounded profile and a low foot that gives the bowl visual weight and stability. The glaze sits unevenly across the surface, with areas of pooling, fine speckling and subtle ash marking from the kiln atmosphere. Tonal variation moves from soft green-grey to warmer, earthier notes, recording the conditions of the firing and the placement of the bowl within the kiln.
